Why would an evil tree want to give its fruit, its means of reproduction, to anyone? Vergil, and by extension urizen, formed a bond with the tree so that it might give him its fruit and make him the literal demon king, except.why? this also tells me that the qliphoth is aware that vergil ate the fruit and is now actively sheltering/assisting him, hence why it makes the pools for griffon and co and why it gives vergil a throne. This tells me that the tree was testing urizen for weakness, and when it found none it allowed the illusion to weaken until he became whole, wherein the illusion was shattered completely.
it also accommodates his familiars via healing pools that dante has to destroy before reaching the final boss arena, and it's pretty obvious the tree is at least somewhat sentient as it outright displays an illusion of vergil's home, one it symbolically begins shattering as urizen eats the fruit. So, from what i gathered vergil, upon eating the fruit, immediately gains authority over the tree, it literally makes a seat for him to sit on while he's contemplating his rivalry with dante, and it dispels this seat when he gets up. the one who eats the fruit gains an insane amount of power, but as we saw from mundus's true form in dmc1, this might come with consequences such as their form simply becoming an amorphous mass of power.
the tree is from hell, it uses its own fruit to get demons to guard it. To me this feels like a sort of devious trap. Only demons who have the potential to become king can claim the fruit, as the empusas jealously guard it and a lot of demons go out of their way to prevent any without strength from ever reaching it. You have this tree that's formed a sort of symbiotic relationship with demons, it makes a fruit from the bodies of humans it harvests just oozing with power, then it calls upon the strongest demon in hell to claim that power. One thing that's been bothering me is why the qliphoth fruit ceremony to give kings power exists to begin with.
